Annex B - Interdisciplinary Research Studies Justification Essay

RESEARCH JUSTIFICATION
YEAR ONE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH STUDIES

Research Topic: Environmental Science

Chosen Area of Focus: An investigation of the water quality along Sungei Ulu Pandan River in Singapore.

1. Framing our research topic
Our chosen area of focus is the "water quality of the Sungei Ulu Pandan River". We have chosen this topic, as we are fascinated by the eco-system the river holds. In order for it to thrive, the water quality must be suitable. We thus want to study the quality of the water to ensure that is favourable. The river can also be used for recreational purposes, and it must be safe for all to enjoy too.

2. Reasons for choice of topic
We chose this topic as we want to analyse the water quality of the Sungei Ulu Pandan. It holds a great eco-system, with many numerous kinds of wildlife, such as the Red-eared Slider and the Common Sandpipers. It is also great for recreational activities, and the quality of the water must be suitable enough for that to happen. Our gathered data may also benefit the public too. Thus, we chose this topic.

3. Feasibility of the research

a. There is a need for our research, as we have to know the water quality to help the public by giving them more information on Sungei Ulu Pandan. Hence, our research can help to let the public know more about Sungei Ulu Pandan's water quality.

b. It is possible to carry out and complete the project, as we have the equipment capable of helping us with this project and the test site (Sungei Ulu Pandan River) is near our school.

c. The proposed course of action is logical and realistic as it can be completed with the equipment, favourable weather and with our hard work and synergy.

d. The research provides sufficient opportunity for generation of ideas, as we will constantly have to think of ways to do certain items in the project. As for analysis and evaluation of ideas, we will have many opportunities to analyse information and evaluate ideas on how to go about deciding what to do next.
4. Manageability of the research

a. The timeline for the different components of the project will be decided later based on the situation then. But overall, the project will be done as quickly and carefully as we can, trying our best not to go out of point and staying as close to the topic as possible.

b. This research provides sufficient opportunity for group work as we will need to be in sync and work harmoniously, for example who will be assigned to do what component of the project and we will have to work together.

c. We do expect some obstacles along the way, such as poor communication among the group members, lack of data (not credible and accurate) and unfavorable weather. We intend to overcome these obstacles by trying to keep the group focussed, communicate more and make sure everyone understands what they have to do. As for weather, we will hope for the best.

5. Accessibility of the information required
Information on testing procedures and data collection of substances in water are especially useful to us, such as phosphates and nitrates. Our sources are found in the school already. The satellite view of the Sungei Ulu Pandan River is also useful to us, as we then can be able to plot out a specific site for the collection of water samples.
